The $200 Decision That Saved This Homeowner $2,300

When His Dehumidifier Died, He Was Covered

HERE'S WHY MAINTENANCE PLANS ACTUALLY MATTER

I was out in Farragut yesterday for a warranty inspection. Customer we did about two years ago - full encapsulation, dehumidifier, sump pump.

His dehumidifier died. Just stopped working. Non-serviceable parts. Nothing anyone did wrong, just bad luck.

I swapped it out with a brand new unit. He paid nothing.

If he hadn't been on our maintenance plan? That would've been a $2,300 bill.

This is why I'm writing this. Because most people don't understand what a real warranty actually does until they need it.

The Hesitation Last Year

Here's the thing - this customer almost didn't renew his warranty last year.

He told me, "Everything's working fine. I don't know if I need to pay the $200. I can probably handle the maintenance myself."

I get it. When your crawlspace is working right, spending $200 feels unnecessary. Why pay for something when nothing's broken?

So I talked to him about the Wi-Fi thermostat we could add. Real-time monitoring on his phone. He'd know immediately if something went wrong. I gave him a discount on it since we'd be out there anyway.

He decided to go for it. Paid the $200 warranty fee, paid for the Wi-Fi upgrade.

That was November. Six months later, his dehumidifier quit. And that $200 decision just saved him over two grand.

What the Warranty Actually Covers

Our warranty isn't complicated. You pay $200 a year. Here's what you get.

We come out and inspect everything. Check the dehumidifier, clean the filter, make sure the drainage is working, look at the vapor barrier. Basic maintenance that keeps everything running right.

If something breaks, we fix it or replace it. No charge.

That's it. No fine print about what's covered and what's not. No "Oh, that particular part isn't included." No service fees or trip charges.

Equipment fails? We handle it. That's the whole point.

And if you want the Wi-Fi monitoring, we can add that. You get alerts on your phone if the humidity goes up or the unit stops working. Catches problems before they turn into bigger problems.

When the Dehumidifier Went Out

So in May, I get the call. His dehumidifier stopped running.

I knew right away it was probably a non-serviceable part. Sometimes that just happens. Not often, but it does.

I called AprilAire. They shipped me a new unit. I grabbed one from our shop just in case and headed out to Farragut.

Swapped it out. Plugged in the Wi-Fi thermostat. Tested it to make sure everything was running. Done.

Total time? Maybe an hour. Total cost to the customer? Zero.

Because he paid that $200 warranty fee, he was covered. Simple as that.

The Math That Matters

Let's break down the numbers.

Annual warranty fee: $200

Cost to install a new dehumidifier without warranty: $2,300

What he saved: $2,100

That's not even counting the hassle he didn't have to deal with. No calling around for quotes. No waiting weeks for someone to come out. No wondering if he's getting ripped off.

One phone call. I showed up. Problem solved.

That's what $200 a year gets you. And honestly, that's a pretty good deal.

Why Most Warranties Don't Work Like This

You've probably heard the horror stories. Customer calls about a warranty claim and gets the runaround.

"That's not covered under your warranty."

"We need to send someone out to assess it first - that's a $150 service call."

"That'll take 3-4 weeks to get approved."

"The labor is covered but the parts aren't."

Big companies do this all the time. They sell you a warranty that sounds great, then make it nearly impossible to actually use it.

They've got call centers. Multiple departments. Approval processes. All designed to wear you down until you just pay for it yourself.

That's not a warranty. That's a scam with paperwork.

Protect Your Investment

Your crawlspace system is an investment. The warranty and maintenance plan protects that investment.

If you've had work done and you're not on a maintenance plan, you're taking an unnecessary risk. When something breaks, you're paying full price to fix it.

If you're getting quotes right now, pay attention to the warranty. Not just what it says, but how the company actually handles it.

Our annual maintenance plan is $200. That includes inspection, maintenance, and full equipment replacement if needed. No games, no fine print.

Want to know more about our warranty or schedule your annual inspection? Give us a call. We'll walk you through exactly what's included and answer any questions you've got.

Why drainage matting matters for crawlspace encapsulation, with matting shown in a crawlspace

I'm standing in a crawlspace in Knoxville that's tall enough to walk around in. The customers use it for storage. Christmas decorations, old furniture, boxes of stuff they don't need every day but want to keep. They called because they know the crawlspace has moisture issues. That old vapor barrier on the ground is to

I was in a crawlspace yesterday - older house, probably built in the '70s - and saw something I see all the time. Black dots all over the wood. Hundreds of them. I can't tell you how many times I've seen inspection reports with pictures of these exact dots labeled as "severe mold contamination." Then the homeowner

I was out in Sevierville yesterday looking at a crawlspace. Insulation falling everywhere. Fungal growth on the wood. A little water pooling near the door.
